Strategy for 9/6 jacks or Better
The way to look at strategy for Jacks-or-Better video poker (and by extension all video poker) is to list the hands in order of priority. The hands on top should always be played regardless of what you have to break up to play them. Thus, if you had a low pair and a four-card straight with one high card, you would keep the low pair and discard all the rest because in the long run you will make more money by keeping that low pair. Or, if you had four to a flush but three of those are to a royal flush, you would go for the royal flush.

The percentages that follow are based on perfect playing of the strategies in this book for the best type of Jacks-or-Better machines. If I say that the four of a kind is a 424-to-one shot, it will be a much greater long shot if the player decides to discard every three-of-a-kind hand he receives on the initial round. In addition, each version of Jacks-or-Better video poker that is less than a full-pay machine has slightly different percentages because some of the strategies for these machines are different and—it bears repeating—strategies alter the percentages.
